Post Diploma Certificate: Hospice Palliative Care/Gerontology at MacEwan University combines the skill sets necessary for nursing care of older adults or the terminally ill. Older patients often require complex and specialized care to maintain physical and mental health. Nurses are able to offer their patients increased mobility, improved resilience and independence, and greater peace of mind. Palliative care aspires to relieve the suffering and enhance the quality of life in persons living with acute or chronic illnesses. Nurses assist individuals and their families during losses, death and in the bereavement process.

The Course Includes

Program Outcomes

The program prepares students for the Canadian healthcare system and creates a solid foundation for future nursing practice. The curriculum is developed using Canadian standard practices, and thus gives our graduates an employment advantage in the career opportunities available following their successful nursing registration in Canada.

Nurses enrolled in the program build increased knowledge and skills in the physical, social, emotional and spiritual domains of palliative care and gerontology. As components of the evidence-based curriculum, students learn core competencies within the nursing specialties of gerontology and palliative care, apply knowledge to clinical situations, develop interpersonal therapeutic relationship and leadership skills, evaluate ethical dilemmas, and manage illness symptoms or grief through appropriate nursing, pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions. Students receive theoretical and practical knowledge through classroom lectures, discussions, clinical lab practice, and a variety of innovative learning activities.
